GREETING

Greeting from ART AQUARIUM artist, Hidetomo KIMURA

GREETING Image

Since putting myself in the world of Aquarium,
I have met many fish in many countries.
Because I have started my job from collecting marine fish from worldwide, I was attracted to the colorful beautiful fish which are natural grace of the sea.

Of course I still have this feeling but since I started my activity as ART AQUARIUM artist, I have been deeply attracted to the mysterious beauty and the look of natural simplicity Goldfish (Kingyo) has.

When I come up with an art which is completed by putting fish inside, I inevitably tend to choose goldfish.
The reason is probably because goldfish itself is an artwork created by human hand.
As a person creating art, I believe I am attracted to art.

When I hold an exhibition as ART AQUARIUM artist, I always make Japonism area and express Japan with my artwork using goldfish.

This is my attempt as Japanese and as sending new art from Japan to the world.
Thankfully, this Japonism artwork and space always get high reputations.
I am so delighted to be able to hold exhibition in various places with these artworks.
Through my Japanese like artwork, I am able to tell Japanese culture to many people.

I am producing the exhibition, always hoping that people will experience the Aquarium sublimating as art and feel the message put inside.

The ART AQUARIUM I create is fusion of product, space design, direction and ecosystem in the Aquarium tank.
Beyond the technology to catch people's heart, there lies natural beauty this earth has created.
goldfish is created by human hands but there is no doubt that it is in the providence of nature.

I hope from the encounter with my artwork, people will be able to feel a “small notice”, wanting to protect beautiful thing.

ART AQUARIUM’s Goldfish

The goldfish is an ornamental fish with a history molded by human hands, which has changed its shape in various ways.
Its history begins about 2,000 years ago in China, with the discovery of a relative of the red crucian carp born from a genetic mutation.
It was brought to Japan in 1502 (in the Muromachi period), and it is said that at that time it was an extremely luxurious item that only castle lords or daimyo had a chance to see.

Once the Edo period began, samurai and wealthy merchants began keeping goldfish in ponds at their estates, and goldfish were celebrated as “beautiful flowers” that decorated the geisha districts and beautifully represented “coolness” in the hot summers.
In the latter part of the Edo period, when common people could obtain them as well, a goldfish boom occurred to the extent that they began to be drawn on ukiyo-e prints, furniture, and kimono patterns, and became the cornerstone upon which Japan’s unique goldfish culture was developed and continues to the present day.
This exhibition is an attempt to revive the world of the “stylish” goldfish bred in the Edo period, and to usher them into the modern era, reborn in a new form.

ART AQUARIUM often attracts attention due to its artistic expression and ideas, but it greatest pride lies in the underlying knowledge and skills used in bringing an ecosystem into existence and making use of its fish.
The fish swimming here receive nutritious meals, high-performance water purification devices, and the gentle care of the biological management staff who watch over them 24/7, even through the night. They lead happy lives, receiving the maximum amount of affection from people both as ornamental fish and as living creatures.
Of course, after the exhibition is over, the goldfish are returned to their ponds in the goldfish markets and to goldfish wholesalers in good health.
We travel to exhibitions with the species that are rare and difficult to obtain, leaving them in our care and taking care of them.
Many goldfish also travel to Hokkaido and Okinawa for ART AQUARIUM.
During the exhibition, some of the fish have babies, and sometimes the babies grow bigger and are able to go onstage in the exhibition.

ART AQUARIUM wants to prepare the best and brightest stage for the goldfish that have become ornamental fish.
This exhibition is shaped by that thought.

I always want people to experience the underwater world formed by an aquarium sublimated as art, and to take the message it contains to heart.
ART AQUARIUM is the fusion of the ecosystem of an aquarium with the design and staging of a product and a space.
Beyond the technology grasped by the human mind, there is a natural beauty created by the earth.
Goldfish were produced by the hand of man, but there is no doubt they are also a part of nature’s providence.
While being brilliant and elegant, I hope that through the fleeting dance of the kingyo you will feel a small sense of realization that you desire to protect these beautiful things.

Last, this exhibition just celebrated its 11th anniversary, and we have had a total of 7.6 million visitors to date. (* As of September 10th)
During this journey, we have received the cooperation and understanding of many people.
But we especially owe our thanks to all the people who have visited our exhibition.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for being able to take a place on this bright stage and continue this project to the present day.
