A cornerstone of “NIGHT AQUARIUM” in Nihonbashi Tokyo,
Rantaro KOJYO of the theater troupe ‘Gekidan KOJYO’ returns!
For three days—Tuesday, September 10th, Wednesday the 11th, and Friday the 13th—
a two-part performance unfolds: Part 1, the bewitching and elegant ‘Oiran Dance’, and Part 2, ‘Hanamachi Dance’.
Thursday, September 12th will see the one-night-only ‘Oiran Night: Special Edition’,
with players of traditional Japanese instruments collaborating on the ‘Oiran Dance’ for Part 1 & Part 2.
For your enjoyment, this live performance will feature the Tsugaru-jamisen as well as Japanese drums.
Born April 11th, 1995 in Iizuka, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Second-eldest of the Kojyo brothers, who form the popular theater troupe ‘Gekidan KOJYO’.
Plays both leading (male) and female roles in drama and dance performances alike.
Son of troupe leader Shingo KOJYO. Younger brother of troupe second-in-command Kantaro KOJYO. Elder brother of Tsukitaro KOJYO and Torataro.
In addition to serving as the troupe’s star on stage, behind the scenes, he also brings his unique sensibilities to the shows' sound and lighting.
At the age of 14, he met Masahiro Nitta, the second-generation member of the traditional Japanese music school ‘Nittaryu’, who would immediately become Rantaro’s inspiration in dedicating himself to learning the Tsugaru-jamisen.
For his 19th birthday performance, he wrote, directed, and starred in ‘Shunka Shuto: Under the Cherry Trees’.
Later that year, he held another acclaimed performance of the same play at the famed ‘Asakusa Mokubakan’ theater.
