NIGHT AQUAQIUM

2018’S FIRST EDITION OF ART AQUARIUM IS SET TO BE HELD
IN HAKATA, FUKUOKA!! 8.1 MILLION PAID SPECTATORS AND COUNTING! STILL EVOLVING AND CAPTIVATING PEOPLE ACROSS JAPAN, THE FASCINATING WORLD OF HIDETOMO KIMURA’S ART AQUARIUM, INCLUDING ITS MUCH-DISCUSSED WORKS, IS SET TO UNFOLD IN KYUSHU! March 16 (fri) – May 16 (wed)

We have concluded the exhibition in Hakata, Fukuoka

ART AQUARIUM, the headline-grabbing exhibition that continues to amaze all of Japan,
is set to re-emerge in Hakata, bigger and better than ever before, with a procession of new,
first-ever works, and even more vibrant, dazzling performances!

This exhibition highlights the culture surrounding goldfish (kingyo),
which is rooted in the Japanese way of life and is well known to the people of Japan today.
It first blossomed in the Edo period (1603-1868).
This aquatic art exhibition combines an aquarium designed around a motif of “wa” (meaning both “peace” and “Japan”)
with cutting-edge production technology, including light and video.
Here, the goldfish are the performers. Ranging from those seen often at events such as festivals,
to rarely-seen, prized varieties, they will put on a vividly colorful, living pageant.

This entirely new kind of space, which stimulates all five senses,
is created by the man who was the first to combine “aquarium” with “art”: the ART AQUARIUM Artist, Hidetomo KIMURA.

Beginning with this exhibition, with the Japan-wide “ART AQUARIUM: kingyo Series”,
the fascinating world of Hidetomo KIMURA,
which has attracted record-setting crowds wherever it has appeared, such as at SKY AQUARIUM in Roppongi Hills,
will heat up the Hakata spring in dazzling fashion.

TamateriumKyushu 1st appearance

A luxury piece featuring a Tamatebako crafted from thick acrylic and adorned with Kanazawa gilt.
All of it applied using 24 karat gold, usually not used in such gilt.
Water has been sealed inside using special construction, providing a wonderful portrayal of the boundary between our world and the world beneath the waves when the piece is viewed from above.

Tokogake Goldfish OrnamentKyushu 1st appearance

A hanging scroll art aquarium that melds the movements and likenesses of living goldfish.
In this piece, imbued with the wabi-sabi aesthetic, a black goldfish swims across a sumi-e painting built on key tones of black and white. Enhanced with audio effects.

KirikoriumKyushu 1st appearance

Artwork usind Edo-kiriko which is the traditional craftwork from Edo period.
Making use of the characteristic of Edo-kiriko cut glass technology, kingyos look mysterious and beautiful when looking from above and the side.
Beneath part is made by acrylic, the modern craftwork, imitating the Edo-kiriko.
The ancient and modern craftwork technology Japan is proud of have collaborated to bring out elegant beauty to the artwork.

Super OiranKyushu 1st appearance

“Oiran” which is the first artwork and also has been the leading artwork at ART AQUARIUM for the past 10 years, mesmerizing 6 million people has been reborn to spectacle artwork.
It is world’s biggest kingyo bowl and having “super” in its name, it is a very special artwork. In “Super Oiran”, about 3,000 kingyos will be swimming inside compared to 1,000 in “Oiran”.
With lighting in seven colors and projection effect, it will become the greatest Oiran just suitable for the ART AQUARIUM 10th anniversary.

Temaririum

It is sphere shaped artwork with the motif “temari”, which is one of the traditional Japanese toys.

It is perfect fusion of traditional craftwork and aquarium.

Kutani Goldfish ExhibitionKyushu 1st appearance

An art aquarium crafted through the traditional Japanese art of Kutani porcelain.
Adorned with goldfish designs applied using the three foundational Kutani techiniques: Kutani blue, akae red, and hanatsume pink.
With this luxury piece, you'll be able to take goldfish that seem real enough to appear in a real exhibition from the top, while the sides will allow you to enjoy a brilliantly colorful world of goldfish adorning the Kutani porcelain.

Show of Kingyo

Kingyo was originally looked at from above.
In the present, the main stream of aquarium tank is to be observed from the side but at kingyo fair, it is still judged by looking from above.
Because the circle shaped tank does not have air bubbles nor waves on water surface, it is most suitable for appreciation.
The water overflows evenly from the top to the side so you feel as though you are looking at kingyo which is in the scoop of water mass.

Andonrium

From the goldfish swimming inside and the graphic made from the lace on the side,
it creates the complex shadow that continuously changes which brings out the new attractiveness of the goldfish.
Motif being “andon” whichis the traditional Japanese light, it can be said this work is the compilation of the thought, lighting by aquarium.

Bonborium

Bonborium The series that likened an aquarium to illumination.
A work reflecting the image of a “bonbori” (traditional Japanese light) which is familiar in Japan from the Edo era to the present.
The attractiveness bonbori has is emphasized.
Please enjoy the collaboration of kingyo lighted with an abstracted air and the slowly changing light.
